They used to be an indie band. Today, they are the quintessential sound of alternative rock that would coalesce with grunge and drive a stake through the heart of hair metal. May 1991 marked the debut of the psychedelic goth influenced band from Chicago, fronted by Billy Corgan. Smashing Pumkins’ Gish was released by Caroline Records and produced by Corgan and Butch Vig, who was relatively unkown at the time (Howie Weinberg is credited as the mastering engineer for the original release and the reissues by Virgin records). Butch Vig subsequently produced Nivana’s Nevermind.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of their debut album, Smashing Pumpkins announced a livestream listening party. Today (Friday 28 May 2021) tickets are available here for the 30th Anniversary listening party for only $19.91 + Q&A with Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin happening May 29 2021. Proceeds benefit PAWS Chicago. Their new double album, Cyr is out now.
